Aging of plastics
Thermoplastics can age during their use. This aging can be caused by excessive temperatures, the influence of chemicals and / or exposure to light.
Long-term stability of plastics is a quality criterion for many applications. Automobile manufacturers require thermal aging tests for various plastics, such as Volkswagen AG for PP (VW 44045) or Daimler AG for plastics / plastic components of the engine air guiding (DBL 5408).
The tests are made in compliance with the different specifications. The storage times can be 168 h to 2000 h. Apart from visual tests, mechanical tests are frequently performed after aging and the results are compared with the initial values then.
