Flammability tests for electrical applications

Damage to electrical appliances during use can not be excluded entirely. This can lead to cause heat or sparks.
Various organizations, such as the German Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) or UL, developed various test procedures for assessing the fire hazard of plastics.
The standard UL 94 classifies plastic materials according to how they burn under identical conditions.
The glowing/hot-wire based test methods according to DIN EN 60695-2-10 simulates the hazard from heated electrical conductors.
The method for the determination of the proof and the comparative tracking indices of solid insulating materials (CTI or PTI value) indicates the hazard of leakage currents under the influence of applied electrolytes. The range of services is completed with the determination of the volume resistivity and surface resistivity of solid electrical insulating materials.
